Rick Ector

NRA Training Counselor, Chief Range Safety Officer and Certified Firearms Instructor

Rick Ector has taught firearms classes in Detroit since 2001. As an NRA Training Counselor he also trains other instructors, and he serves on the National Rifle Association board of directors.

He is interviewed regularly on firearm safety and personal protection, and his CPL training has been covered by the Associated Press, National Public Radio, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Detroit News and Fox News.

Through Legally Armed in Detroit he also runs an annual free shooting event for women, which has introduced thousands of first time shooters to the range.

The legal block covers the CPL application, pistol free zones, deadly force, Michigan self defense law, and what happens after an incident.

You shoot a 30 round qualification as part of the class, with coaching on safe handling, grip, stance and sight picture.

Questions students ask


Does this class meet the Michigan CPL requirement?

Yes. The class is the NRA Personal Protection in the Home course, which satisfies the training requirement to apply for your Michigan Concealed Pistol License.


Do I need any experience?

No. Beginners are welcome. The class starts with safety and the fundamentals before anyone goes to the range.


Where are the classes held?

At Recoil Firearms, 22509 Ecorse Rd in Taylor, just southwest of Detroit. Check your class listing to confirm the location for the date you book.


How long does it take?

One day. The schedule covers defensive shooting, handgun skills and range time, Michigan legal topics, home safety, and handgun selection.


What should I bring?

A valid state ID and clothes you can shoot in, including closed-toe shoes. Your class listing will note anything else you need for the day.


What happens after the class?
